CHOICES
Looking into the suitcase
She had to make the toughest
Choices
What must go…
What has to stay…
What is absolutely necessary…
AND
What is a luxury…
So difficult…
So many memories…
Too many things…
She looks around her…
The Family Album…
Her grandmother’s recipes and cookbook…
Family jewelry…
Her laptop — the rest of her memories are there
A change of clothes…
Sturdy shoes…
AND
The camera
All the rest…
while important
could be replaced
Smelling smoke now
And
Hearing the crackle of
flames in the underbrush
The Wildfire was threatening
Finished…
She snapped the latches…
Took one last look
AND
with a deep breath
walked away
Calling the dogs and
Picking up the cat carrier
on the way out…
she hoped for at least
the chimney to remain
standing…
Pointing the way to
a future and
Rebuilding her life.
