On this Halloween day, people usually think about Edgar Allen Poe and his really spooky poems, but he was a romantic at heart.

Here is a favorite of mine …

Please enjoy and I will be back tomorrow with my original poetry!

For Annie

Thank Heaven! the crisis-
The danger is past,
And the lingering illness
Is over at last-
And the fever called “Living”
Is conquered at last.

Sadly, I know
I am shorn of my strength,
And no muscle I move
As I lie at full length-
But no matter!-I feel
I am better at length.

And I rest so composedly,
Now, in my bed
That any beholder
Might fancy me dead-
Might start at beholding me,
Thinking me dead.

The moaning and groaning,
The sighing and sobbing,
Are quieted now,
With that horrible throbbing
At heart:- ah, that horrible,
Horrible throbbing!

The sickness- the nausea-
The pitiless pain-
Have ceased, with the fever
That maddened my brain-
With the fever called “Living”
That burned in my brain.

And oh! of all tortures
That torture the worst
Has abated- the terrible
Torture of thirst
For the naphthaline river
Of Passion accurst:-
I have drunk of a water
That quenches all thirst:-

Of a water that flows,
With a lullaby sound,
From a spring but a very few
Feet under ground-
From a cavern not very far
Down under ground.

And ah! let it never
Be foolishly said
That my room it is gloomy
And narrow my bed;
For man never slept
In a different bed-
And, to sleep, you must slumber
In just such a bed.

My tantalized spirit
Here blandly reposes,
Forgetting, or never
Regretting its roses-
Its old agitations
Of myrtles and roses:

For now, while so quietly
Lying, it fancies
A holier odor
About it, of pansies-
A rosemary odor,
Commingled with pansies-
With rue and the beautiful
Puritan pansies.

And so it lies happily,
Bathing in many
A dream of the truth
And the beauty of Annie-
Drowned in a bath
Of the tresses of Annie.

She tenderly kissed me,
She fondly caressed,
And then I fell gently
To sleep on her breast-
Deeply to sleep
From the heaven of her breast.

When the light was extinguished,
She covered me warm,
And she prayed to the angels
To keep me from harm-
To the queen of the angels
To shield me from harm.

And I lie so composedly,
Now, in my bed,
(Knowing her love)
That you fancy me dead-
And I rest so contentedly,
Now, in my bed,
(With her love at my breast)
That you fancy me dead-
That you shudder to look at me,
Thinking me dead.

But my heart it is brighter
Than all of the many
Stars in the sky,
For it sparkles with Annie-
It glows with the light
Of the love of my Annie-
With the thought of the light
Of the eyes of my Annie.

Aim for Grace*

It is inevitable…

The Wheel turns

and life goes on…

Accepting what we

cannot change

Working through

Grace…

We do our best

Day by Day…

We live…

love…

laugh…

As the Wheel continues

to Turn and

Life Goes On

This poem was inspired from the following Ann Beattie quote:  “What will happen can’t be stopped:  aim for grace.”

Reality

I love my friends

They will do anything for me

AND

I am always there for them

What is totally…

and completely

Exasperating…

Confusing…

and leaves me

“at a loss”

for words

Are those friends

who have someone

in their life

who is completely

manipulating…

working them for

personal gain

AND

My friends are

completely clueless

as to what is

being done to them daily

Unfortunately…

Some people thrive on

Drama…and

unknowingly encourage

and enable their

manipulators

My only recourse…

is to be there and help

pick up the shattered pieces

of their soul when

Reality hits them

fully in the face

Love Always

She went first

Fighting for years

Yet…

She lost a battle

she could not win

But…

She loved him

to the bitter End

He lasted another month…

Losing his own battle

with loneliness and

a broken heart

Loved her always

Loving her until

in Death

they were together

Again

Dark Proposals

The light dies

And

Again

Darkness Rules

What follows is your

own perception

Secretive…

Scary…

Evil…

Or

Safe…

Protective…

Mysterious…

Your reaction to what

Darkness Proposes

depends on your

own reactions

and perceptions

Be afraid

Or

Embrace the

Darkness

Jagged Pieces

Jagged Pieces

You always believe the lies

of others over

truth from me

It goes without saying…

You are weak when

it comes to standing up

for the truth…

especially where I am

concerned

Putty in the hands of

those who manipulate

your life

One day…

You will wake up to reality…

And

See you were merely

a stepping stone for

others and their

advancement

While you are trying

to pull their knives

from your back

No one will be there

to pick up the

jagged little pieces

of your broken

soul

I will no longer be

there allowing you to

belittle me

while others witness

your destruction at

the hands of

those you worship

My Childhood

My Childhood

I was never a “girlie” girl

But…

I wasn’t a tomboy either

Just a regular kid

who loved to play

I played hard…

Went after everything all out…

Roller skating…

Bike riding…

Skate boarding down the

Methodist Church hill

And

on the tennis courts

Lived in the pool every

minute possible

My knees, elbows, arms,

and legs were always

evidence of what

I did best…

Had a great time!

Those small scrapes and

bruises of childhood are the

autobiography of my life

back then …

A small scar or several

scattered across my

knees and elbows,

arms and legs

A childhood story for each

and every one of them

Looking at the roadmap of

my childhood across my

skin…

I smile and miss all the

good times we had

back then!

My Special Place

I sit in my favorite chair

Music wafts all around me

A variety of music

That takes me

to all places…

some known…

some unknown…

The longer I sit

the more I travel

And…

Smile

Finding my self in

a favorite place…

a special place…

if only in my dreams

My country place…

with a glass conservatory

where I settle in for the day

to read…

to write…

and to travel in my

mind through words and music

With book or

journal and pen in hand…

A cup of tea by my side

and a cat sleeping peacefully

at my feet

I have arrived…

Behind Locked Glass

It has been there for years

On display with no explanation

Some have no idea what

they are viewing

Others…

Only say,

“Oh My!”

Only she knows what it

represents

Only she knows why it is

locked away

There for viewing only

So…

No one is able to reach it…

touch it…

hurt it…

as it remains

behind

Locked Glass

“All Trades” Weekly Challenge: Stars

Posted on October 21, 2013 by

Cups

In today’s world, we have a tendency to forget those little pinpoints of light in the sky. I live in the city, so I’m guilty! I can’t remember the last time I saw the stars. This week, I want you to let the plasma sphere move you!

Since Eccentric Chai is a blog which promotes doers within any trade, I like to leave my weekly challenges open to interpretation, and open to all forms of media. Whether you are a writer, painter, or a candlestick maker (hardy har) then this challenge is for YOU.

Get out there and do something involving the stars. Get outside and see them. If you can’t get to a place where you can see then with your own eyes, get online and check out some cosmic artwork. Do whatever you like. Let the stars inspire you. Then take that inspiration and do.

Need some ideas? Here are a few:

  • Go stargazing with the family (bonus: try to find the seasonal constellations)
  • Take your camera, a tripod, and go make a time-lapse photograph of the night sky.
  • Paint a picture of the night sky, or of an astrological sign based on a constellation
  • Take the kids to the nearest planetarium
  • Go read “Stars” by Robert Frost
  • Write a creative nonfiction piece about the birth of a star (or death)
  • Write a poem about Orion

Once you are done, and are proud of your experiences and/or creation, post a link in the comments below to show everyone how the stars have inspired you this week.

Now get out there and DO

Riding the Night

Giggling ~

She ran up the Stairway of Moonbeams

Beckoning her to the Night Sky

Stars by the thousands invite her

to come plan…

Challenging her…

Teasing her…

“Please do something daring

and different this time!” the Stars begged.

Usually they played

Hide and Seek…

Chase and Tag…

But…

Tonight…

she had a surprise for

Everyone!

The Moon was her

Co-Conspirator

It was his idea and

she loved it immediately

The best trick yet!

Just as the Stars were

bursting with anticipation

The Moon dropped something

from his lowest crescent point

“What was that?” gasped the Stars.

When the glow settled

She climbed up and with one quick

push the swinging began

Higher and higher

with each kick

she soared through

the amazed stars

Laughing…

She continued to swing

higher and higher until finally…

She looped the Moon…

A complete circle …

Pausing at the top arc for effect

Then…

Swooping down through

the glittering Stars

This was it…

The best ever…

They laughed and

Cheered

And

Shouted…

AGAIN!
