Poetry … Found
Oh, to go back to eighteen
And…
Do things differently
My life would be so much
More who I am now…
On the insideTo have done what I really wanted
Not…
What was expected I knew then I could write
Yet…
Took the safe path…
A path that led me to thirty-seven years
steeped deeply in all aspects of
EducationHowever…
Had I taken the other path…
That same thirty-seven years
would have been spent
Writing
And…
Do things differently
My life would be so much
More who I am now…
On the insideTo have done what I really wanted
Not…
What was expected I knew then I could write
Yet…
Took the safe path…
A path that led me to thirty-seven years
steeped deeply in all aspects of
EducationHowever…
Had I taken the other path…
That same thirty-seven years
would have been spent
Writing
Instead…
with retirement…
I am allowing that
Writer to emerge…
escape the confines of others
And…
Freely fill white pages lined in blue
with thoughts…
poetry…
stories of all types
Being the me I always knew
was there
Oh…
To have had a poetry teacher

Always…I wish you peace, joy and happiness, but most of all I wish you Love.
As Ever, Annie
This poem was inspired after reading The Poetry Teacher by Mary Olive from the Writer’s Almanac poem of the day.
“The Poetry Teacher” by Mary Oliver, from Dog Songs. © Penguin, 2013. Reprinted with permission.
I read a variety of poems daily from my personal library as well as posts from many website email lists that provide a poem of the day. This is for pleasure as well as to fill in the gaps of my education where poets and poetry are concerned in the effort to improve my own poetry attempts.
