Trap of the Heart

In the beginning
You appeared to be
an open door

As time went on
that door began
to close more
and more and more

Until…
One day it
Slammed shut in
Anger
without warning
Loud…
A bang that echoed
across the miles

What happened?
Ego?…
Secrets?…
Anger?…
All directed
toward me
Yet…
I have no
idea what lies
behind it all

Months later a
small crack…
a brief opening…
Hope?
Not at all
You see…
All trust is gone

And…
the door eases
shut this time
with brief…
occasional…
glimpses…
cracks…
no anger…
perhaps one day
it will open again

But…
I will be ever cautious.
I will not be so quick to accept.
I will not be fooled again.

An open door is
Not always friendly…
welcoming…
But…
Sometimes it is
in reality
A Trap of the Heart

This poem was inspired after reading Doors by Carl Sandburg.

I love Shawn’s poetry. This one speaks to me on a very personal level…my life is a series of making it up as I go … one day at a time.

Shawn L. Bird

I’m making this up as I go along

You in the other place

Singing echoing off the walls

in an imaginary  paradise.

You in the other place

Eden entwined between

sheets and dreams

making it up as we go along
