Swinging Bridge
Growing up we
spent time at the
Swinging Bridge
spanning the Colorado
River dividing two
Central Texas counties
We would run across
shouting with joy
and setting the
bridge into motion
An elaborate Rope and
Lumber affair back then
It saw hay-rides…
school field trips…
necking in the moonlight…
And…
way too many late-night
keg parties where some
drunk fool jumped into
the river below and
could not figure out
how to get climb
the river bank
Today…
it has been refurbished
for at least the second
time
Now being held high
above the Colorado with
huge steel ropes attached
to cement stanchions on
each end…
Yet…
It still has its
wooden deck and a
nice sway when
driven across
Or…
better yet…
when a herd of
screaming children
experience the joy
of running from
one county to
the next!
