The Kitchen Table …

The Kitchen Table …

Joe found herself sitting alone

at the kitchen table …

Pondering so many

things that have made

up her life

The kitchen was always

the center of everything

during her growing up

Yet…

now it is quiet…

empty…

no one left for sharing…

for loving…

for laughing…

How would things

have been different

had it not been for

that one horrible

night twenty years

ago…

The night her

world died…

her life changed

forever…

always…

Her hands trembled

and her fingers

traced the lines

along the envelope

flap … pondering

Was this letter

some joke …

some metaphysical

trick of the time

space continuum

Slowly, she placed

the envelope face

down on the table

and…

nudged it under

the opposite

place mat …

the place mat where

no one sits

yet…nothing has

changed since

that night

If she is meant

to read whatever is

inside …

it will be there when

or if…

she decides she has

the strength to

run her right

index finger between

the flap and the

envelop breaking

the seal…

unleashing what

is waiting for her

good … or … evil

Changes

Tonight…

Smiling down on me

through a thinly veiled

mist

Hanging low cuddled

in the western sky

is the ever-growing

Moon

A cool October

night giving the

true feeling of

fall in the air

Changes…

New things showing

themselves daily…

Who’s that Girl?

WOTL Prompt 9

Here is my response to this weeks Writing Outside the Lines Challenge Prompt 9 …

Who’s that Girl?

She had long brown braids

Cotton dress with a pinafore

to protect it

High topped lace up

leather shoes

Thick stockings that were

being gradually eaten by her shoes

Seems to be about twelve…

Who is that girl?

Why is she in my dreams over

and over and over?

I don’t recognize this dirt

road she is walking

I cannot she her face

because she is always

walking ahead of me

Walking with a purpose

and a brisk pace

In my dreams I follow her

but always awake before

she reaches her destination

Who is that girl?

What does she mean to me?

Why is she stalking my dreams?

Blue Demons

Here is the Writing Outside the Lines challenge prompt for the week of September 27th:

You come upon a blue door in a stone wall. What happens next?

Prologue: This week has been a struggle for me … not to find time to write, but to take time to write … this prompt or anything else. Personal demons are chasing me and unfortunately they have won some days and I have won others … right now it is a draw because you can never really fight your demons and win.

Blue Demons

Blue has always been my favorite color

from the clearest pale aqua to the

deep midnight sapphire blue

Blue comforts and consoles me

while at the same time

haunts me …

Sparkling blue sea water

Clear cold spring water

The artificial blue of a

man-made pool

all call my soul …

Reach out and comfort me

when life needs to be

Rejuvenated…

Refocused…

Renewed…

Yet …

Those deep dark midnight blues

hide my demons…

My fears…

My nightmares…

I long to open this door

This beautiful turquoise door

And find that clear cold spring

That restores me and makes me whole

waiting for me on the other side

But…

The fear that lives in midnight blue

Keeps me on the outside

Where it is safe in not knowing

what is on the other side

Feeling that the known at this

point is so much safer than

the unknown ever can and will be…
