What’s In A Name?

What’s In A Name?

My given name some would say

is —

unique …

different …

not fitting a child …

or …

a woman …

A nickname cannot come

from a name like that

It is what it is and something

to be lived with but not one

that can be ‘grown into’.

I dreamed of having a cute

nickname all my childhood

I love(d) nicknames…

felt they were special …

making the owner someone

different …

standing out from the

rest of us

An old lover used to

call me ‘Kid’ as a term

of endearment …

no one did before him

or since he died

That was the closest

I ever came to having

a nickname that was

just for me

Completely my own…

So …

Deep into adulthood

and I continue to live

with the name that was

given me at birth

given proudly by my mother

but one that bedeviled

me my entire life

Now…

I have come to use a version

of my middle name which

fits like a pair of comfortable

well-worn jeans of Chucks

It is more me than the other

One of simplicity and

ordinariness …

but one that is me in its

simplicity as I travel

through the final journey

of my life …

Poems Inside …

Every day…

Every night…

More times than

I can count

Poetry flows through

my mind

Some are fleeting and

never are caught

long enough to find

a home … either

on paper

or …

my computer screen

My life is a series of

Poems …

Some good …

Most not …

But poems nevertheless

that define me…

my life…

my struggles…

my joy…

my tears…

my pain…

Words that cannot hide

in the deep dark

recesses of my mind …

Morning Gift…

Morning Gift…

Sunlight on a dirt road

Led me into the forest

A place of peace and

tranquility drawing

me ever deeper into

the trees.

A forest primeval

Untouched by humanity

A sacred place…

A private place…

A place to restore

and rejuvenate

How had I missed this

special area having walked

this road many times?

Did it appear when I needed

it most …

or …

Was I that oblivious

to my surroundings?

Finding a clearing

shimmering in early

morning light, I

settled down and

listened…

felt…

observed…

absorbed…

the gifts of the day…

Traveling …

Traveling…

She was a small town girl

With no chance to see the world

But…

She had deep aspirations

And…

Long held wishes

Her second home was a

library just around the corner

Long hot summer afternoons

spent sitting on the cool

hardwood floor

Reading…

Traveling…

Going places of her dreams

Books were her world

And…

The library her safe haven

She could solve a mystery…

Visit a foreign world…

Travel through the stars

into deep space…

All at her fingertips

Encouraged by not only her

family but the librarian

To Read…read…read…

And…

Find herself …

Become anyone she wanted …

Travel the world …

And…

Discover new ones …

Peace

A warm spring day

Road trip to anywhere

My legs propped in the

open car window catching

the sun’s warmth and the

gentle breeze flowing

over them …

After a crazy winter of

broken hearts…

shatter dreams…

And …

lost souls…

Finally Peace is

beginning to settle in …

To Follow the Light

To Follow the Light

Shining through the darkness

Cutting into the woods

She saw it …

That unusual light

What was it?

Where did it lead?

Who is there?

All questions she

asked each time

the light presented

itself …

Yet never taking

time to answer them

One sleepless night

deep after midnight

she wandered into

the woods and there

it was …

shining on the path

leading her…

challenging her…

daring her…

to follow

Without knowing how

she arrived suddenly

there was a small

softly lit cottage in

front of her begging

her to come inside

Carefully, she walked

onto the small porch

and looked inside

to find a cozy fire and

welcoming room she

could not resist entering

On the hearth sat a

mug of honeyed tea

and a plate of sweet breads

Did she dare?

Was she intruding?

Who lived here and

where were they?

Hearing a tiny sound,

she turned and saw the

cottage’s resident …

“Come in my child,”

“I have waited for

a long time for you

to come,” stated the

tiny elderly woman.

“Sit, eat, drink,”

“Your training is

about to begin, and

your life will be

forever changed.”

Between Light and Dark

Between Light and Dark

It is said there is a fine line between

love and hate

genius and madness

friendship and strangers

Sometimes it is grey

Sometimes deepest black

The line is there nevertheless

It seems my life is in

limbo …

the fine line …

wavering between

grey and black

Never knowing how things

will be from one minute

to the next

How people will act…

React…

Life seems to go from

weird to …

weirder to…

weirdest on any

given day

Today has been

one of the weirdest

of all …

Perhaps I am not

supposed to understand

to know what the

Universe has planned

So…

I will straddle that fine

line and

follow where it may lead

Not questioning…

Not worrying…

Only trying to accept

and go on…

The Universe

Once that door opened

When I saw the possibilities

I knew the time was now

No more holding on…

holding back…

pretending to be someone

I could never be…

I saw my future

The possibilities awaiting

No lies…

No manipulation…

No ego getting in the way…

The stars called my name

Begging me to follow

Challenging me to

take that one chance…

All I had to do was …

Just open the door

Walk away

And become

one with the stars …

Understanding…

Understanding…

So many questions …

Why do we not know …

Why do we not really understand …

Can there be answers …

In the words of David Mitchell:

“The healthy can’t understand

the emptied, the broken.”

So how can we …

The emptied …

The broken …

Understand anything at all?

Any Sunday

A cold crisp Sunday

Lazy

Nothing pressing

Nothing important

A perfect day for

catching up on

just what I

want to do

Comfort food

simmering on

the stove top

A new book

waiting to be read

Naps needing

to be taken

A perfect day

Doing just what

needed to be done

to begin the

restoration of

my soul …
