What’s In A Name?
My given name some would say
is —
unique …
different …
not fitting a child …
or …
a woman …
A nickname cannot come
from a name like that
It is what it is and something
to be lived with but not one
that can be ‘grown into’.
I dreamed of having a cute
nickname all my childhood
I love(d) nicknames…
felt they were special …
making the owner someone
different …
standing out from the
rest of us
An old lover used to
call me ‘Kid’ as a term
of endearment …
no one did before him
or since he died
That was the closest
I ever came to having
a nickname that was
just for me
Completely my own…
So …
Deep into adulthood
and I continue to live
with the name that was
given me at birth
given proudly by my mother
but one that bedeviled
me my entire life
Now…
I have come to use a version
of my middle name which
fits like a pair of comfortable
well-worn jeans of Chucks
It is more me than the other
One of simplicity and
ordinariness …
but one that is me in its
simplicity as I travel
through the final journey
of my life …

Love this!! Nick names are not all there cracked up to be. People used to call me Suzy, especially the older generation!! Ugh! Hated that. And my sister pegged me with a nick name very early on that I will not disclose, but needless to say it’s not very nice🙃
