I Want to Be a Writer

Just this morning as I was trying to get

my thoughts on paper my newest member

of the Cat Clan wrapped her little paws

around my pen just after plopping herself

down in the middle of my blank journal

As an abandoned kitten she is fitting in

nicely with the boys …

playing chase and ball with them …

sleeping by their side and mine …

being hissed at by the girls …

but tolerated …

Comparing her to other kittens

I’ve raised she is way ahead of

the intelligence curve

Perhaps because she was on her

own for at least three weeks before

she joined out little family

She is fearless and meeting

kitten milestones earlier than the

current adult cats did at her age

Today after eating wet food, boiled

chicken and hamburger she ventured

into the world of crunchy dry cat food

She is a survivor and I expect many

more writing days with her assistance

either to my pen or lounging on my

blank journal

All in all, Sox is a keeper…

Unbreak Me

Unbreak Me

I never expected you to be

the one to come along and

unbreak me

I was far too damaged

I wanted from you nothing

more than friendship,

loyalty, trust

And…

No further damage

It took me months to trust you

with my damaged psyche and soul

It took you five seconds and one

hurtful word to destroy

friendship…

loyalty…

trust…

And to break my cracked

fragile pieces that were

yet unbroken

The pieces I held most

precious

Five seconds to lose all

I had gained after years

of partial healing

Five seconds for me to

lose trust in everyone

and realize I would never

be anything but

Broken…

Wisdom

The older I become the more

I realize that I am still learning

Some things I learn are not

what I expected …

But …

Necessary nonetheless

In the past few months

I realized that friends are

nice to have

But …

they are not a necessity

Acquaintances are more

realistic than friends

I have never had an

acquaintance stab me

in the back

Never has an acquaintance

deliberately hurt me

My acquaintances have been

loyal, respectful, caring, and

take time for me when friends

rarely if ever have done

So …

in  my old age the wisdom

of experience has given me

the realization that I will

never become close friends

with another person again

I will seek out and maintain

my acquaintances who

enrich my life like no others …

Bacon Magic

Bacon Magic

Being a properly raised southern girl

I grew up knowing the magic of bacon

Of course, the ability to wake the

dead when cooked early in the morning

is just one piece of bacon magic

That delicious aroma wafting

through the house can bring forth

the most die-hard late sleeper

As Emeril says, “Pork fat rules!”

Yes it certainly does!

Bacon added to anything enhances

other flavors and tickles the

taste buds of everyone I know

Now … I grew up with the

traditional aluminum bacon

grease can with a strainer that

was part of the obligatory

kitchen canister set

That can held a place of

honor next to the cook top

where it was readily available

to season almost anything

needing some magic

It was there if bacon

cooked for breakfast did

not produce enough ‘grease’

to fry a proper egg

Handy to add to the bottom

of an iron skillet before

buttermilk biscuits were baked

Not owning one of the necessary

aluminum canister sets I have to

use the universal substitute to save

my magic bacon elixir …

a Mason jar that sits at the back of

my stove-top just as handy as the

aluminum dripping can was when

I was growing up watching my

Mom create Kitchen Poetry every

time she prepared a meal

As I write, my mouth waters thinking

about freshly snapped green beans

and new potatoes cooked with a good

splash of bacon magic in the pot

I have yet to master the flavor my

Mother created when she cooked

this combo … and I never will

The older I become, the more I

use bacon magic in my cooking

Not only does it make my food delicious …

But …

it brings back such lovely

food memories from childhood

I Am What I Am

I Am What I Am

Take me for who and what I am

I can be nothing more or less

I am me and that is all

I know how to be

I refuse to apologize for that

Being the daughter of a

strong Southern Woman

I cannot do less than she

did or expected of me

Therefore, I will not

bend to your will

And…

I will not allow you

to continue to intimidate

me with your actions and words

I am a proud GRIT

Girl Raised in the South

and will never be what

you are trying to make me be …

Maybe

In a world of uncertainty

Maybe …

In times of trouble

Maybe …

When your personal

world is falling apart

Maybe …

What needs to happen

is to sit back

look around

take a deep breath

And …

reflect …

reevaluate …

adjust your sails …

And …

begin a new day …

What’s In A Name?

What’s In A Name?

I love my name …

Love that it is unique

and a bit unusual

A name that is old-fashioned

but one that suits me

When I think of old-fashioned

names they all seem to begin

with the letter ‘M’ but mine

does not

I am not …

Myrtle

Maude

Miranda

Marjorie

Mamie

Or

Marie

All family names but

not mine …

I am not named for

my maternal grandmother –

Mary Arminta

but my many times

paternal great-grandmother –

Clarissa Suejane

My name is rarely seen on

monogrammed items found

almost everywhere

But…

that is just fine with me

because I am not the norm

which definitely suits me

ask I patiently wait to be born …
