The Kitchen Table …

The Kitchen Table …

Joe found herself sitting alone

at the kitchen table …

Pondering so many

things that have made

up her life

The kitchen was always

the center of everything

during her growing up

Yet…

now it is quiet…

empty…

no one left for sharing…

for loving…

for laughing…

How would things

have been different

had it not been for

that one horrible

night twenty years

ago…

The night her

world died…

her life changed

forever…

always…

Her hands trembled

and her fingers

traced the lines

along the envelope

flap … pondering

Was this letter

some joke …

some metaphysical

trick of the time

space continuum

Slowly, she placed

the envelope face

down on the table

and…

nudged it under

the opposite

place mat …

the place mat where

no one sits

yet…nothing has

changed since

that night

If she is meant

to read whatever is

inside …

it will be there when

or if…

she decides she has

the strength to

run her right

index finger between

the flap and the

envelop breaking

the seal…

unleashing what

is waiting for her

good … or … evil

Grief…

Life in many ways

reflects the different

stages of grief…

of loss…

We struggle through

a revolving door

repeating…

revisiting…

back and forth

between anger…

denial…

loneliness…

Never reaching

acceptance…

so hope and

reconstruction

can begin

Leaving us with

Never ending

Pain…

Grief…

That horrible day
The terrible memories
all flood back to her
every time she smells
Raw Damp Earth…

The open grave
The grief
The desperation
all comes flooding
Back…
