Helping Hands…

In my life there have been so

many hands …

My mother’s hands that held

me gently rocking until I slept

My father’s hands who taught

me it is just fine for a little

girl to know how to handle a

hammer and saw

My grandmother’s hands who

died before I could get to

know them

My grandfather’s hands that

always had a hidden treat

when he came to visit

Every generation has a family

of hands to guide, love, lead,

teach, and comfort

I am the last of my line

There will be no little hands

left for me to pass along

memories of my heritage…

Hands…

The hands that
held me…
nurtured me…
guided me…

Are long
        Gone…

The hands that
gently led me on
a warm Autumn
afternoon under
a canopy of fiery
leaves and
sheltered me…
taught me…
protected me…

Are long
        Gone…

These hands once
held by love
Now are aged…
Freckled…
Lonely…
Will never hold
the hands of
a child…
another lover…

Those hands
remain…

Yet…

All others
Are long
        Gone…
