An Unshed Tear

The look on my friend’s face as he

told me a snippet of his childhood

has haunted me for nearly

twenty-five years

I thought of him today and when

he shared with me his growing up

in an eye-blink town in the middle

of the harsh Texas Panhandle

His parents divorced when he was

very young and he and his mother

moved back home with his grandmother

Being raised by his mother, grandmother,

and a gaggle of aunts in an

old school family with no male role model

and too many ‘old lady’ rules

shaped his life

Tears gather as he talked

but never escaped

…Big boys don’t cry and all

that Southern Bullshit

…Never show emotions

Still upper lip

You know the drill

He continued the story by

telling me his father, new wife

and teenage son now lived

in the rural Texas town where

I grew up and my mother

still lived

Asking if I knew them

I replied … No, but the

name and their business

were both familiar to me

His teenage half-brother was a

local star athlete he told me

‘My father now has the son

I could never be’

were the words that

brought tears to his

middle-aged eyes

Those words stuck with me

all the years

as did the unshed tears

Deep inside that little boy

raised by all those women

blamed himself for the loss

of his father …

his family …

And perhaps what might

have been a different life

GOODBYE

Goodbye

“Goodbye,” she said

It has been – interesting

But …

The time has come

Leaving is difficult

Death is permanent

I  must go …

To find myself …

Staying will only lead to

Death …

Maybe mine …

Perhaps yours…

Death is not

My style

Not my future

The choice made

“Goodbye,” she said

Leaving to Live …

WARNING!

Please …

Don’t ever fall in love

with someone like me …

I wear my heart on my sleeve

I care too much

I am loyal to a fault

I get a bit clingy – just the way I am

I trust until you give me a

reason not to

I will always be there for

you until you are no longer

there for me

I love too deeply

And …

Give too much …

Much more than I ever receive

But …

Once you hurt me

Break my trust

Abuse my heart and soul

You will be removed

from my life without

WARNING … or

a backward glance

And …

NO second chances

So … you have been WARNED:

Do not fall in love with someone

like me if you cannot take me for

who and what I am and give to me

everything I give to you …

Writing Outside the Lines – Prompt 2.12

The Question

At this time in my life

I answer to no one but me

The only thing stopping me

is me from doing anything

I owe no allegiances to others

I follow my own rules …

My own life

The only things stopping

me from certain things

is the knowledge that

I might cause emotional

pain to another

But …

There will come a time

when all will be revealed

regardless of who might

be hurt in the process

I must do what is

right for me…

best for me…

and not worry about

anyone else …

Question Answered …

Freedom

When we reach a certain age

life allows us to have a new

measure of Freedom

Freedom to do and say

as we please and not

care one whit what

anyone thinks

Freedom to do and be

exactly who we want

Freedom to enjoy life

in any way possible

Allowing us to be

spontaneous and

damn the consequences

Freedom to take each

day as it comes and

act/react to any and all

opportunities as they arise

Take time to smell the roses

Or …

Go skinny dipping in

the middle of the day

Live life to the fullest …

Always …

Take a Hike!

The older I get

the more I cannot deal

with drama from other

people … it just is a

waste of my time

and energy

Of course a nice long

walk in the woods

to chill me out and

find peace in my

soul is what is

needed almost daily

But …

What I really want

to do is to tell everyone to

TAKE A HIKE …

the meaning being

get out of my life …

Struggle

Struggle

We never know what is going on

in the lives around us

Just as they never know what is

going on in our lives

Everyone has their own

personal demons

Not always apparent

Yet …

There all the same

The old adage …

“What doesn’t kill us

makes us stronger”

applies to us all at

one time or another

Struggles are different

at different times in life

and come in varying

degrees of stress

Without the struggles

life would not be

nearly as interesting …

our stories would all

be the same …

Rebuild

It is never too late

to make changes in life

Refresh…

Renew…

Redo…

Rebuild…

Make your life what

you want it to be

what you want it to be

get started now

move forward

And…

Never look back!

Simplicity

“Eliminate physical clutter. More importantly, eliminate spiritual clutter.” ~ D. H. Mondfleur ~

In my life I have always collected

things…

people…

memories…

But …

there comes a time when all this

extra life detritus becomes not

only overwhelming but too

much of a weight to carry

Simplicity is needed and

the easiest place to begin

cleaning and clearing is

not the physical clutter…

not the spiritual clutter…

it is the personal clutter …

the people weighing me down

tearing me down

making my life one that I

no longer recognize as my own

Once I have the life I deserve

the life that is my own by

removing toxic people

Then …

the other clutter can be

dealt with in a timely fashion

My Life …

My life will never be

some wonderful love story

will never be a saga for the ages

will never be even one book

But …

I get to live all those things

when I read

I get to feel things I

could never feel in any

other way

I get to travel and have

experiences that will

never be reality

I get to escape when needed

I get to dream

I get to be anyone I want

each and every time

I open a new book …
