Writing Outside the Lines – Prompt 2.14 – Exquisite

Today’s Prompt: Mark Helprin: “It was a mad and beautiful thing … “

Exquisite

That summer was one of

Surprises

Change

Love

and…

Loss

When I think of those

hot summer nights

and even hotter days

the only word that

comes to mind is

Fireworks!

We met and started

out white-hot as a

bottle rocket

Continued to flame

and blaze through

day after day seeing

fireworks in everything

at every turn …

from wild and crazy

lightning storms risking

everything to get just

the right picture as

a single streak

connecting with

the ground

Celebrating the

4th of July at

the city parks

fireworks show

once again risking

it all to get just the

right exposure of

fireworks in the sky

All in all that summer

as Helprin so perfectly said:

“It was a mad and beautiful thing … “

Looking back to those memories

Remembering the fireworks not

only in the sky, but in our hearts

We could have had it all

But for one thing …

Commitment

WARNING!

Please …

Don’t ever fall in love

with someone like me …

I wear my heart on my sleeve

I care too much

I am loyal to a fault

I get a bit clingy – just the way I am

I trust until you give me a

reason not to

I will always be there for

you until you are no longer

there for me

I love too deeply

And …

Give too much …

Much more than I ever receive

But …

Once you hurt me

Break my trust

Abuse my heart and soul

You will be removed

from my life without

WARNING … or

a backward glance

And …

NO second chances

So … you have been WARNED:

Do not fall in love with someone

like me if you cannot take me for

who and what I am and give to me

everything I give to you …

Writing Outside the Lines – Prompt 2.11 – Freedom

Freedom

When we reach a certain age

life allows us to have a new

measure of Freedom

Freedom to do and say

as we please and not

care one whit what

anyone thinks

Freedom to do and be

exactly who we want

Freedom to enjoy life

in any way possible

Allowing us to be

spontaneous and

damn the consequences

Freedom to take each

day as it comes and

act/react to any and all

opportunities as they arise

Take time to smell the roses

Or …

Go skinny dipping in

the middle of the day

Live life to the fullest …

Always …

Passion

Passion

We so often think of passion

as it applies to love of another

or our thoughts of what of

the love of another should be

But …

Honest…

True…

Real…

Burning…

Passion shows as a light

from the soul

Eyes sparkling and

a shining face when

someone talks about

their life …

their work …

their passion …

Be it rock climbing

or composing the next

symphony …

There is no difference

in the look and feel of

passion a person has

about the importance

of their life …

And …

Their life’s work …

Passion …

Unbreak Me

Unbreak Me

I never expected you to be

the one to come along and

unbreak me

I was far too damaged

I wanted from you nothing

more than friendship,

loyalty, trust

And…

No further damage

It took me months to trust you

with my damaged psyche and soul

It took you five seconds and one

hurtful word to destroy

friendship…

loyalty…

trust…

And to break my cracked

fragile pieces that were

yet unbroken

The pieces I held most

precious

Five seconds to lose all

I had gained after years

of partial healing

Five seconds for me to

lose trust in everyone

and realize I would never

be anything but

Broken…

Helping Hands…

Helping Hands…

In my life there have been so

many hands …

My mother’s hands that held

me gently rocking until I slept

My father’s hands who taught

me it is just fine for a little

girl to know how to handle a

hammer and saw

My grandmother’s hands who

died before I could get to

know them

My grandfather’s hands that

always had a hidden treat

when he came to visit

Every generation has a family

of hands to guide, love, lead,

teach, and comfort

I am the last of my line

There will be no little hands

left for me to pass along

memories of my heritage…

Chaos …

Chaos …

Being an observer has

taught me many life lessons:

I have watched more and more

people devastated by another

through misunderstanding

because we confuse what

‘love’ really is in our lives

‘Love’ the word has been used

and abused in so many ways

it no longer has the true

meaning intended

More people are used rather

than loved and in the

confusion believe love exists

When we are loved by

another there is compassion,

kindness, caring, unconditional

acceptance and trust

When we are used by

another there is deceit,

pain, comparison

and competition

Let the world return

to ‘Love’ and stop using

one another so ‘Chaos’

may be overcome …

Walking in after all these years

my heart still skipped a beat

this was our home until all

had to be abandoned

not by choice mind you

but by circumstance

Everything dust-covered

decorated in spider webs

and scattered leaves

But … on the piano to

my surprise was a lit

candelabra …

No…

It couldn’t be …

after all these years

after our forced separation

That candelabra on the

piano was his signature

a clue to me the awakening

was happening …

Missing You…

Missing You…

I miss you …

in the morning

when your pillow is empty

I miss you …

when I come home

to no one

I miss you…

the way you pulled me

tight in your sleep

spooning …

I miss you …

kissing each eye and

then my lips

I miss you …

calling me ‘Kid’

the name only

you called me

I miss you …

when I put on

your flannel shirt

and floppy socks

I miss you …

your essence

your presence

your heart

your love

I miss you …

the place under

your chin is no

longer there

for me to

rest my head

I miss you …

every time I change

the sheets and your

Ropers are right

there under the bed

I miss you …

every minute of

every day

I miss you …

with every visit

to your final

resting place

I Miss YOU …

Something to Think About …

Something to Think About …

Love is an enigma at best

It seems to be something much

easier to give than receive

Or…

Maybe I just pick all the losers

of the world to fall in love with

The ones who use me up and

throw me away like yesterday’s news

I agree that there is a fine line

between love and hate…

genius and madness…

Perhaps madness must

set in before love can be found

or at least returned …
