Eternal

There is something about

Winter that is eternal

The nature of things

Scents of the Holidays

Outside warm smells of wood smoke

and …

Inside air scented with

lavender and fire

The things that touch

the heart, hearth and soul

Allowing us to remember

and create new memories

Bridges

Bridges have been in my life

all my life

I love them and some of my

fondest memories are the

bridges my father built

during my childhood

So many different ones …

Cement …

Steel …

Suspension …

Swinging …

Long …

Short …

All have their own stories

as I have my stories

with them …

Perhaps one day I will

write about

‘Bridges I Have Known’

Unfinished …

Unfinished

Things fell apart quickly …

suddenly …

unexpectedly …

with words left unsaid

and questions left unanswered

Months go by without

a thought of you

And…

suddenly, I see something …

hear a song …

read a poem or a quote …

and a flood of memories return

Just when I think everything

is finished I realize

that this will always be

UNFINISHED …

Stranger in My Home

Stranger in My Home

On days like this

Nights when I cannot sleep

Wandering from room to room

Searching …

For something …

Anything that is familiar

I am a stranger in my home

Memories follow me

like ghosts

Floating through my mind

Confusing me …

Haunting me …

Keeping me awake …

There is nothing familiar

Nothing left that I remember

Only a house with emptiness

yet filled with things

things I don’t need

And …

Cannot release

Who have I become?

Does it matter?

There is only me

in my solitude

But …

alone …

never lonely …

My Mother’s Jewelry

My Mother’s Jewelry

Being a gracious Southern lady in

the 50s and 60s …

My Mother was always dressed

to perfection wearing hose

and heels even to do daily house work

Every outfit had matching jewelry

Nothing expensive mind you

But…

Tasteful with what she could afford

Nearly always a matching set of

necklace, bracelet and clip-on earrings

As she moved into he 70s and 80s

She liberated herself of hose and heels

And the dreaded girdle …

Replacing them with casual dresses

Skirts and blouses

and…

Jeans or slacks

She favored comfort over decorum

as most women did during that time

With that fashion change

the matching jewelry sets sat

unworn in her jewelry box or

gift boxes in her dresser

Those were replaced with with

a simple ring

sometimes a necklace

And…

she pierced her ears which

opened up a whole world

of jewelry possibilities

It also meant we could share

earrings …

The Closet

The Closet

The one thing I keep avoiding

The one room that I cannot

cross the threshold and do

what must be done

I have gone through drawers

and cabinets that held her

scarves, personal items, jewelry,

and other random bit of a

person’s life

But…

I cannot bring myself to

enter her closet

The last of what made her

alive to me

The collection of eclectic

dresses, skirts, tops and blouses,

jeans, dress pants, sweat pants,

shoes from sandals to dress

Once these items are weeded

through and given to a place

that provide continued use

of these items …

She will be really…

completely…

forever…

gone

Her essence…

Her scent… (White Shoulders)

Her quirky sense of style

that always worked for her

All will be gone

And…

So will she …

Forever …

Frozen in Time …

Frozen in Time …

She held his pocket watch

in both hands

Remembering…

How many times

had she done this

same thing as a child?

He had two actually …

The railroad watch

with a train running

across the bottom

just below the ‘6’

His everyday watch

The one that he

slipped into his

right pocket each

morning before going

off the work

to build another bridge

connecting ribbons of

highway all across

the state

The other …

A gold watch with  a

snap cover and a red

stone embedded in

the top of the stem

His Sunday watch

The watch with a

chain that draped

across the fancy vest

he wore that sported

a special pocket for

the watch and a

buttonhole for the

toggle end of the

chain ..

draped just so across

his mid section

I inherited both

upon his death

And …

even though he was

buried in his Sunday

best, the full suit

I kept the Sunday

watch as mine

And …

his Railroad watch

went in to its rightful

place in his pocket

as it should have been

What Breaks Us …

What Breaks Us …

I have been broken so often

in my life that there is

nothing left to break

What breaks a person?

Lack of trust?

No loyalty?

Love gone wrong?

All of these …

Yet…

What broke me every

single time was a

broken promise…

and the memories that

person created in my life

The broken promise creates

the crack in my soul and the

residual memories finalize

the break …

the broken heart…

the shattered soul…

the lack of trust…

I no longer trust anyone

That is my only protection

I believe no one because

words are empty promises

unless actions back them up

So…

If I believe and trust no one

I will no longer be disappointed …

Broken …

The safety feature for my soul …

Keeper of Memories

Love …

Loss …

Memories …

Someone must remember

Someone must keep them alive

The memories …

The times …

The laughter …

The long conversations …

The comfort of silence …

The pain of silence …

Time goes by …

But …

Memories live on …

Memories…

Looking into the

depths of the

continual flowing

water…

that dark blue

of an Artesian well

from her childhood

Submerged memories

flow up from her

soul matching the

bubbling water

Memories as cold

and clear as that

continually

flowing well
