My Mother’s Jewelry
Being a gracious Southern lady in
the 50s and 60s …
My Mother was always dressed
to perfection wearing hose
and heels even to do daily house work
Every outfit had matching jewelry
Nothing expensive mind you
But…
Tasteful with what she could afford
Nearly always a matching set of
necklace, bracelet and clip-on earrings
As she moved into he 70s and 80s
She liberated herself of hose and heels
And the dreaded girdle …
Replacing them with casual dresses
Skirts and blouses
and…
Jeans or slacks
She favored comfort over decorum
as most women did during that time
With that fashion change
the matching jewelry sets sat
unworn in her jewelry box or
gift boxes in her dresser
Those were replaced with with
a simple ring
sometimes a necklace
And…
she pierced her ears which
opened up a whole world
of jewelry possibilities
It also meant we could share
earrings …
