My Mother’s Jewelry

Being a gracious Southern lady in

the 50s and 60s …

My Mother was always dressed

to perfection wearing hose

and heels even to do daily house work

Every outfit had matching jewelry

Nothing expensive mind you

But…

Tasteful with what she could afford

Nearly always a matching set of

necklace, bracelet and clip-on earrings

As she moved into he 70s and 80s

She liberated herself of hose and heels

And the dreaded girdle …

Replacing them with casual dresses

Skirts and blouses

and…

Jeans or slacks

She favored comfort over decorum

as most women did during that time

With that fashion change

the matching jewelry sets sat

unworn in her jewelry box or

gift boxes in her dresser

Those were replaced with with

a simple ring

sometimes a necklace

And…

she pierced her ears which

opened up a whole world

of jewelry possibilities

It also meant we could share

earrings …

The Closet

The Closet

The one thing I keep avoiding

The one room that I cannot

cross the threshold and do

what must be done

I have gone through drawers

and cabinets that held her

scarves, personal items, jewelry,

and other random bit of a

person’s life

But…

I cannot bring myself to

enter her closet

The last of what made her

alive to me

The collection of eclectic

dresses, skirts, tops and blouses,

jeans, dress pants, sweat pants,

shoes from sandals to dress

Once these items are weeded

through and given to a place

that provide continued use

of these items …

She will be really…

completely…

forever…

gone

Her essence…

Her scent… (White Shoulders)

Her quirky sense of style

that always worked for her

All will be gone

And…

So will she …

Forever …

Fireflies…

Fireflies…

Gentle breezes

A star filled night

Memories return of

nights like this

Secure in my

mother’s arms

watching fireflies

Dance…

The Other Side

She stands there

with a smile

Waves happily

AND

vanishes

Not my Time

Summer Night

Soft gentle breezes

Stars on the ground

Fireflies in Mason jars

Matching twinkles in the sky

Easy living

A simpler time

Drowsing in Mom’s lap

After eating fresh churned

Peach Ice Cream

Mother’s Shawl

Shawl

Sweet childhood memories

Wrapped in your

Loving arms…

Protected

Soft wool…muted colors depending on the shawl

Blues and/or purples

My safe haven in your arms

Always there…

Always Love…

The safety of my Mother’s arms

Swaddled in her woolen shawl…

Rocking me…

Soothing me…

Whispering to me…

Until sleep finally comes.

Today’s Quote:

I loved words. I love to sing them and speak them and even now, I must admit, I have fallen into the joy of writing them.
