Live Music

When my body and mind are closed

to the world

When everything seems to be going

south and I feel nothing

I turn to music …

Music is my rescue…

My refuge…

It opens my heart…

my mind…

and —

my soul…

Music can heal what

no medicine can

Music soothes my fears …

my pain …

and —

my anxiety

Music is my life …

Music O’Clock

Music O’Clock

When life becomes much

to weary to continue

When sadness sets in

for the day

I turn to music to

soothe my soul

Calm my fears

And…

Lift my spirits when

nothing else can

I am an eclectic

listener …

everything from

classical to rock

Jazz to Zydeco

Not just the beat…

the melody…

But…

the words …

All combined to

mold the moment

and change the

course of my day …

Night Music

Night Music

Muted unidentifiable music coming

from down the lane

The Palomino guy’s house

is usually lit up like a country church

each night when I walk to the

barn and back

sounds of a TV show drifting out

the back door

Tonight…

it is dark at their end of the lane

I can’t decide where the

haunting music is coming from

It reminds me

of Bollywood movies — that high

pitch sound and phrasing…

But…

I can’t tell for sure

(no identifiable words…

just someone singing)

Definitely not the strains

of Tejano music that

usually floats through

the neighborhood

It is intriguing and

makes me smile…

I wrote this several nights ago, needed to have a break from the PAD prompts and post some of my other work.

Such A Girl!

Such a Girl!

Today has been one

of remembering…

days gone by…

Music reminding me

of what was…

what will never be

Again…

Emotions are high…

Tears…

I am such a

Girl sometimes

Really pisses me off!

Come Darkness, Come Light

This is a Christmas song new to me this year and sung by one of my favorite singer song writers Mary Chapin Carpenter.  Listen to the song … then a poem follows.

Christmas time again and
music is my salvation
So many new to me songs…
So many songs that touch
me deeply...

This time of year is
difficult for me since
I am the end of my line
and have no remaining family

Music is the only thing
that makes the Holidays
bearable for me

Words…

Words…
regardless of the
language hold such
importance for
us all

Words…
Their shades of
meaning different for
each of us…
Music to some ears
For others…
static and white noise

Words…
When used to the
best advantage
bring brilliant
glitter and sparkle
to the soul…

Breeze Music

Soft spring breeze
caressing leaves like
a lover’s hair

Birds singing praises
to the warmth of
the Sun

Bees humming in
time as the day’s
song carries on
the breeze

Butterflies…
tiny yellow…
tinier white…
dance in the air to
a song only they
can hear …
Breeze music…

This brings a smile
to my lips
And…
A tear to my eye

Soft Spring days
Breeze music
remind me of
You…

Southern Music

Southern Music

The true music
of the South
isn’t banjo pickin’
or
guitar strummin’

The real Southern
music is the lilting
drawl of words
only the practiced
tongue of genteel
Southern
men and women
can produce

Words that remind
you of slow summer
days…
Bees buzzing
Warm honey
and cold sweet tea

One syllable words
stretched to three…
sometimes four —
for greater
Emphasis

With clipped
vowels and
consonants that
make a simple
“right here” become
“rit chere”
and “over here”
sounds like
“ova heua”

An authentic Southern
accent is not “red-neck”
not “uneducated” but
a cultivated part of
their culture

A Culture that takes
me back to my roots…
Reminding me of
my Dad…
his brothers and sisters…
my cousins…
All long gone

Their voices…
their words…
their real Southern
Drawl is preserved
in the muscle memory
of my Mind
And …
my Tongue

*This poem was inspired while watching a segment of Trisha’s Southern Cooking on the Food Network when one of her uncles from Georgia was there frying catfish.  His voice so reminded me of my father that it brought tears to my eyes and I longed to hear the voices of those no longer with me.

Music of Life

It wasn’t something
I intended to do

Yet…It happened
just the same

It is a part
of my life…
I cannot stop…
Will not stop…
It is like breathing
Without it I
could not exist

Poetry is the
Music of my
Life

One word
following another
in a Symphony

Each connected
like notes
on a Staff

That Chance

That Chance

We met  by chance
More alike than different
The same vintage
Loved the same
music…
books…
movies…

Finished one another’s
sentences…
Laughed hysterically
at nothing
And
everything

Who could imagine
out of all the people
we would find
each other

That day…
standing in line for coffee
something neither of us
Ever did…
Yet –
both were out
of coffee at home

Spent the entire
morning drinking
cup after cup
And
Filling the gaps
of a
Lifetime!
