Some Poetry on Raymond Carver’s Prose on Poetry

Some Poetry on Raymond Carver’s Prose on Poetry

Carver as an older teen

happened to meet a

gentleman who changed

his life…

his writing in general…

Poetry in particular

After reading his

Prose on Poetry

experience I

compared my

writing mentors…

encouragers…

to his experience

Poetry freedom for

me happened when

I was told poetry

DID NOT have to

Rhyme…

My eyes were opened

and the words could

flow freely across

virgin pages lined

in blue

Like Carver, Poetry

magazine is a must

But…

Unlike Carver, I

have not submitted

An ongoing decision

that must be made

As Ever, Annie

This is submitted for the weekly writing challenge I post at one of my other sites and inspired by the writing Some Pose on Poetry from Carver’s last book of poetry written while he was dying of lung cancer … A New Path to the Waterfall (1989). I have been studying his collective poetry, and this book is by far my favorite.

Poetry

The voice was
low…
slow…
peaceful…
calming…
yet —
sensuous…

Painting a picture
in my mind
with words

Words on a page
Now being spoken
in that
soft…
soothing…
sensuous…
Voice…

Poetry…
An unfamiliar poem
read by an unfamiliar
Voice…

Taking me through
the rise and fall of
words…
sounds…
…the voice

That led me to this place
Mesmerized…
as I am transported
to places unknown

“Timeless”

Oh bliss-to be there–
Where no clock ticks,
Where no planet spins,
Where no sun rises or falls.
There is no sound
Just purity of silence,
Purity of sight,
And purity of unrestrained motion.
The universe dances around me!
Life unimaginable surrounds me!
The flow and energy of spirit astounds me!
Oh bliss!-being here!–
Timeless.
Now I am free.
Spirits sing like sparrows.
Planets spin a sacred song.
The universe, the wise conductor,
Weaves a masterpiece of peace.
Oh such sorrow!-back in body–
Why such sorrow in chains?
The sweet melody now drowned out
By the violence and anxious cacophony.
To bring just a hint of such brilliance here,
Would order even these players to sing.

“Sideways Glance”

Wow!  She looked this way
and her frown became smile!
Just a sideways glance
now frozen in time.
How my anxiety calmed,
And darkness became dawn;
Depression fled to happiness.
Suddenly, I was someone of worth!
Suddenly, I was no longer dirt!
Suddenly, I was given a glance–
and a smile.
Suddenly, as that moment came,
though memory holds tight,
her sideways glance and bright smile
continued on.

1/12/14 – Update – Ocean of Life

Ocean of Life

Chaotic sea with swirling storm
And this boat battered and tossed.
My life replaying before my eyes
As further and further I’m lost.
Thunder shakes and lightning blinds
While wind whips and tears.
There is nothing left to carry me;
I long for someone who cares.
Hope hides as my fight rages on
Against forces far to empowered.
Bones shaking and skin stinging
I know this is my hour.
And just as I fell to the deck
Determined to lie there and die,
There shone a faint light through the storm
Beckoning me to stand and try.
Taking the helm again in this fight
Eyes wide with a new glimmer,
I heaved against power unyielding
To point this wreck toward the light.
Time passed untold through maelstroms’ maw,
My body broken and torn.
At long last the seas seemed to quiet
And I glimpsed the light of new dawn.

12/29/13 Update – Regret

Regret

A sorrowful
Soul…
Slow sits
Revisiting the regret

Each time gets worse
The darkness thickens
Only a pinpoint
light remains
Lost in the
Abyss…

12/24/13 Update – Tapestry of the Heart

Image: We Heart It

Image: We Heart It

Heart wide open no words to read
but a tapestry of life woven indeed.
The words are the threads of life,
showing happiness… and strife.
What those beautiful words say to me
is a vibrant life being lived.

John is one of my most faithful followers on Twitter.  I am proud to introduce him as a guest poet for Whispers of Poetry.

Here is a little something about my newest Guest Poet… John wrote his introduction:

A husband to one, a daddy to two, a friend to many, and forever entwined to the weaving of the universe’s truth, I use poetry and creative writing to untangle the cacophony of emotion within me.  Rhode Island was my birthplace but I now reside in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Soul Rain

The showers come early sometimes.
Those slow, drenching rains,
Soggy leaves clogging drains,
Earthworms struggling,
Mud sputtering.
Mind swirling,
Blood bubbling,
Soggy eyes staining sheets,
Those long, drawing bleats
of sobbing saturating the soul.

Music of Life

It wasn’t something
I intended to do

Yet…It happened
just the same

It is a part
of my life…
I cannot stop…
Will not stop…
It is like breathing
Without it I
could not exist

Poetry is the
Music of my
Life

One word
following another
in a Symphony

Each connected
like notes
on a Staff

Just Passing Through

Just Passing Through —

was written a few days ago before I read the following poem written by the incredibly poet and singer/song writer Leonard Cohen.  I found the following poem only this morning when I picked up Leonard Cohen’s Poems and Songs and felt the connection of his poem to mine.  They are not remotely alike, yet have a similar feel.  ‘As the Mist Leaves No Scar’ was a new poem to me and I was surprised at the collective thought in this poem and mine.   I hope you enjoy both since this is an unusual posting style for me.

As The Mist Leaves No Scar

By Leonard Cohen

As the mist leaves no scar
On the dark green hill,
So my body leaves o scar
On you, nor ever will.

When wind and hawk’s encounter,
What remains to keep?
So you and I encounter,
The turn, then fall to sleep.

As many nights endure
Without a moon or star,
So will we endure
When one is gone and far

Just Passing Through

You came to me
Unexpectedly…
A Surprise…
Yes, but…
Not really
This is just
your style

Your voice filled with
lust…
desire…
expectation…
anticipation…

And…
A question on your tongue…
Leaving the decision
once again…
to me.

A friend with
Benefits whose
company I do
Enjoy…
Neither of us
owing anything to
the other
except…
mutual pleasure
And
respect

One night of
passion…
pleasure…
and pain…
You are gone…
Until the next
time you are
Just Passing Through

Poetry … Found

Oh, to go back to eighteen
And…
Do things differently
My life would be so much
More who I am now…
On the insideTo have done what I really wanted
Not…
What was expected I knew then I could write
Yet…
Took the safe path…
A path that led me to thirty-seven years
steeped deeply in all aspects of
EducationHowever…
Had I taken the other path…
That same thirty-seven years
would have been spent
Writing

Instead…
with retirement…
I am allowing that
Writer to emerge…
escape the confines of others
And…
Freely fill white pages lined in blue
with thoughts…
poetry…
stories of all types
Being the me I always knew
was there

Oh…
To have had a poetry teacher
like Mary Oliver and her dog, Ben

This poem was inspired after reading The Poetry Teacher by Mary Olive from the Writer’s Almanac  poem of the day.
“The Poetry Teacher” by Mary Oliver, from Dog Songs. © Penguin, 2013. Reprinted with permission.
I read a variety of poems daily from my personal library as well as posts from many website email lists that provide a poem of the day.   This is for pleasure as well as to fill in the gaps of my education where poets and poetry are concerned in the effort to improve my own poetry attempts.

Wild and Free

The Muse is flowing

Poetry running free

Like wild mustangs through

my head

Words flow across the pages

reminding me of Spring rivers rising

The words won’t come to me when

I want them…

need them…

Words are fickle and have

a life of their own

Playing out sagas in black

across white pages lined in blue

I give in…

And …

give up…

to the words…

the Muse…

I let the words have their way

Perhaps…

Should I give them their due…

their own free will…

loosen the reins…

they will allow me at some point soon

(I hope)

to manipulate them to my will…

Until then, they are like children

running wild and free…

coming out to play on a whim…

always teaching me the

lessons of freedom.

Guest Poet – Carm Montez

I want to introduce you to my friend and fellow educator, Carm Montez.  She is a delightful person and a darned good poet.  Carm has been sharing her poetry on Twitter and Facebook and I think it needs to be seen another format as well.

Below, I am including a selection of poetry that Carm picked for this blog.  I have attempted to coordinate pictures that represent what she has written.  So without any more of my chatter, here are Carm’s stunning poems.  By the way, she is bilingual and some poetry is in both English and Spanish.  There is at least one in Spanish only.  Enjoy!

I have a couple more, but want Carm’s permission before posting them.  Both are exquisite and she has paired them beautifully with pictures.

All poetry is property of Carm Montez, please be mindful of that.  If you want to contact Carm and respond to her poetry, she is on Twitter @josnoopy29 and on Facebook as Carm Montez.

You may leave comments here and I will pass them on.

Please share this post with your friends that will enjoy her work.  She is an excellent writer and needs the recognition.

My Special Place

Cup of coffee in hand…

Notebook open on the table

Pen resting on a clean page…

Inspiration will come…

Ideas will Perk forth…

This is my special

Sanctuary…

The place where

I feel I do my

Best work

An old world

Cafe

Tucked away on a quiet

Street of a small town

So unassuming…

Yet…

So right…

The place where my Muse

is happy and floods my

Soul with words…

Words to be crafted…

Words to be woven…

By her Hand into

Poetry…

Stories…

Memories…

Today…

I ponder the past…

Look forward to the

Future…

Memories drift in and out

as I sit over 4 am coffee

The first cup of the day

Reading poetry…

Watching the unexpected

kitten who found his way

into my life at play…

His life is content…

Curious…

Loving…

Accepting…

Fragments of his life…

I wish they were

Fragments of mine
