A Breath of Silence

A Breath of Silence

Not a leaf moving

No breeze on the morning air

Just before dawn with

Eastern clouds bathed in

their early morning blush

and brilliance of streaming

gold as the sun begins to

wake the day

Western clouds not to be

outdone bloom fluffy and white

with tips of pink reflecting from

their sisters in the East

As I go about my chores …

Feeding barn cats

Replenishing water bowls

And

Watering my tiny garden

That Breath of Silence

surrounds me

The one that screams loudly

that a scorching summer day

will again push its way into

surrounding yards in my neighborhood

and far-flung fields

Cracking the parched ground

Searing anything green to

crispy brown as

Summer proves again

it has total control

Writing Outside the Lines – Prompt 2.14 – Exquisite

Source: WeHeartIt

Source: WeHeartIt

Today’s Prompt: Mark Helprin: “It was a mad and beautiful thing … “

Exquisite

That summer was one of

Surprises

Change

Love

and…

Loss

When I think of those

hot summer nights

and even hotter days

the only word that

comes to mind is

Fireworks!

We met and started

out white-hot as a

bottle rocket

Continued to flame

and blaze through

day after day seeing

fireworks in everything

at every turn …

from wild and crazy

lightning storms risking

everything to get just

the right picture as

a single streak

connecting with

the ground

Celebrating the

4th of July at

the city parks

fireworks show

once again risking

it all to get just the

right exposure of

fireworks in the sky

All in all that summer

as Helprin so perfectly said:

“It was a mad and beautiful thing … “

Looking back to those memories

Remembering the fireworks not

only in the sky, but in our hearts

We could have had it all

But for one thing …

Commitment

First Day of Summer

The longest day

And…

The shortest night

Summer has arrived

with all its glory

Day time heat

Night time stars

And …

As a very special

treat this year

a rare full moon

The universe is having

both the sun and the moon

watch over us today …

Blessed Summer Solstice!

Those Were the Days …

Carefree …

Bicycle days

Summer fun in shorts and flip-flops

Daily freedom after chores were done

Exploring the nooks and crannies

of my little town

Most afternoons at the pool

With …

Wednesday and Saturday

at the local library

Rock outlined play houses

Pumping hard on the swings

Bailing out if you were brave

Skateboarding down the

Methodist Church hill

And …

Roller skating on the

tennis court

Lightning Bug Nights

and homemade peach ice cream

Those were the days …

Washing My Hair

Dozing in the cooling
bath, I feel your
hands on my arm…
Then gently finger
combing my damp
tangled curls

You wake me with a
Cinderella kiss and say,
“Move up darling,”
“I want to wash
your hair.”

Daring Dive – Day 8 April PAD

Daring Dive

“I double dog dare you,”

my best friend yelled up the

ladder to the high board

We were visiting my father

and spending a hot

summer afternoon at

the local pool

in the town where he was working

She had just executed

Her very first “dive”

From the high board

Both of us were proficient

Divers from the low board

At our own city pool

But…

The high board was just

For jumping and making

The biggest possible splash

We were about 13

That summer

Maybe 12

I forget

But…

I could not let

Her do something

I had yet to do

Besides the high board

Was much lower

Than the one at home

Walking to the end

I gave the board a

Little test bounce

My friend had just

Walked to the end

And dove off

Not my plan…

I had to one up

Her with that

“double dog” dare

I could do a perfect

Swan dive from our

Low board

But…

Could never get

The height to execute

A perfect jack-knife

This board with

The perfect height

For that dive

And…

My friend could

Do neither of these dives

I looked back and down

On her at the bottom

Ladder rung and said,

“Watch this!”

Walking to the mid=point

On the board where I

Would be if diving

From my familiar low board

I took my steps,

Bounced on the end

Got my height and

In mid-air touched

My toes in the perfect

13-year-old version

of a jack-knife

opened out and entered

the water board straight

and splash less

popping out of the

water I looked at

her open mouth and

asked, “How was that?

Did I meet your dare?”

she ignored me and

ran off the end of

that board and landed

with a huge splash in

the perfect 13-year-old

Cannon ball…

Today’s Poem of the Day prompt was to write a ‘dare’ poem.

The Wind …

The Wind …

… the neighbor’s dog
barked incessantly all day

fraying her already
fragile nerves

early spring but she
sees a long summer
ahead

she didn’t know which
was worse …
that damned dog
or the howling wind

the dog she could almost
ignore … eventually …
there was a rhythm

but …

the wind …
that devil in the air
howling…
gusting…
driving her slowly
INSANE

this time of year
when it starts
the wind never
stops …
day and night
going on forever
and …
the dog seems
an almost
welcomed relief

New Day…

Early…
Just after dawn
A soft summer morning

Crickets quietly chirping
their good morning
Birds singing their
response…

Others…
Practicing their early
morning aerial ballet

The sun painting
the sky with
blush and lipstick

A new day
Begins…

Sunshine Symphony

The sounds of sunshine
Late summer warmth
brings a symphony
every day

Gentle breezes sighing…
Birds sharing their personal songs…
Insects humming their secrets…

All create…
the sounds of summer…
the sounds of sunlight
that lull me into the
pleasures of each day

Glory …

Soft summer evening
Twilight brings a
sky of colors…

blues…
grays…
oranges…
pinks…
an explosion in
the Western sky

The Universe is
sharing all it’s
Glory…
