August Heat
The August heat
stayed overnight
making my morning
walk almost unbearable
The humidity crawled
along my hairline and
left damp curls in its wake
The day feels different
than most days …
the atmosphere close
and senses are heightened
As my eyes adjusted
to the predawn dark
the other senses took
over …
There was a faint
smell of horse and
fresh manure in the lot
A whiff of unmistakable
body odor … heat, sweat,
dirt, unwashed body
And…
The sickly sweet smell
of something dead
somewhere in the dark
making me wonder
who else is other there
