A Breath of Silence

A Breath of Silence

Not a leaf moving

No breeze on the morning air

Just before dawn with

Eastern clouds bathed in

their early morning blush

and brilliance of streaming

gold as the sun begins to

wake the day

Western clouds not to be

outdone bloom fluffy and white

with tips of pink reflecting from

their sisters in the East

As I go about my chores …

Feeding barn cats

Replenishing water bowls

And

Watering my tiny garden

That Breath of Silence

surrounds me

The one that screams loudly

that a scorching summer day

will again push its way into

surrounding yards in my neighborhood

and far-flung fields

Cracking the parched ground

Searing anything green to

crispy brown as

Summer proves again

it has total control

Sacred Hawk

For a couple of weeks

Each morning as I walked to the barn

A lone hawk circled high above

and disappeared

Hawks have been symbols in

my life for years

What did this one mean?

This morning I saw a trio

circling in the usual path

of the lone hawk

As I walked under my

dying pecan tree

I heard the rush of

wind over wings and

there it was …

right above my head

not threatening

but …

flying close enough

to hear it swooping

near my head

Looking up …

I saw it rejoin the others

and continue their

morning flight

Was this close encounter

a blessing …

or

a warning …

Either way …

it was a sacred moment …

Morning Clouds

Autumn in Central Texas

and the predawn clouds

had a feel of being at the

beach at sunrise as they

rushed from southwest

to northeast a bit dark

and menacing

My thoughts turned to

the past and early

morning walks along

the beach listening

to waves crash

waiting for sunrise

as clouds rushed along

the horizon

Turning toward home

I sigh and wonder when

I will get that beach time

again … if ever …

Outside My Window …

Outside My Window …

Early spring morning watching the fog

melt away to the dawn I wonder what

is in store today …

This my time …

The time of day to be a bit

Pensive …

Reflexive …

And …

Make plans … that always

change in the blink of an eye …

But …

That is my option …

my choice …

my  life …

going with the flow

knowing that if it

doesn’t happen today

there is always tomorrow

I continue to remember

the following Mary Oliver quote …

“…to learn something by

being nothing …”

I don’t think of myself as

‘nothing’ but the nothing

is a quiet observation that

opens not only my eyes

but my mind and my senses

When the fog lifts and the

mist has burned away will

be my time in nature …

my time to fuss over my

small garden

and be surprised with

new sprouts and newly

appearing veggies from

the day before

And …

Content with my life

I smile …

Morning Gift…

Morning Gift…

Sunlight on a dirt road

Led me into the forest

A place of peace and

tranquility drawing

me ever deeper into

the trees.

A forest primeval

Untouched by humanity

A sacred place…

A private place…

A place to restore

and rejuvenate

How had I missed this

special area having walked

this road many times?

Did it appear when I needed

it most …

or …

Was I that oblivious

to my surroundings?

Finding a clearing

shimmering in early

morning light, I

settled down and

listened…

felt…

observed…

absorbed…

the gifts of the day…

Gone…

Morning shadows

gradually fade and

the night’s struggle

is revealed

Burying my face

in your pillow

I memorize the scent

that is only you

After today…

Only a memory

My heart breaks

as I undress the bed

And…

Go on with

my life

ALONE…

May Morning

Overcast skies

Air so thick it

can be touched

Birds softly greeting

the day

My favorite part

of the day

The morning slowly

waking along

with me

Peaceful…

My tranquil time

Ghost Shadows

Ghost Shadows

Waking to a clear

cold morning

She was surprised

by the heavy frost

Sparkling like a

blanket of tiny

diamonds covering

the world

Clean…

Pristine…

Undisturbed…

Her footprints

appeared like

ghost shadows

showing her path

Quiet…

Calm…

Peaceful…

Even the dueling

roosters and owl

were silent as she

made her way

along her morning

walk

Refreshed…

Rejuvenated…

She returns home

to begin the day…

Country Morning…

Country life…

Early morning walk

and the accompanying sounds

The neighbor’s Palomino

Whinny’s softly as I go by –

he is home this morning

and not in my barn lot

The rooster on the corner

has been crowing since

4:30 AM but now he has

company …

Never before heard cocks

are competing with him

today trying to wake the sun…

One to the north on the

next street over

And…

Another one somewhere

to the East

It is a definite serenade

in the early morning darkness

Silencing the owl that

usually greets me when I

enter his domain

What new wonders await

me before I get home to

the warmth of my

kitchen and a cup of coffee

Two Shadows

After days of cold

foggy early mornings

Today…

is beautiful

clear…

Stars close enough

to reach out and touch

A crescent moon creating

shadows — two shadows —

one in front of me and

another following me as

I walk in its bright light

A pink hint of dawn

to the East

The Little Dipper

turned nearly upside

down spilling stars

across the early

morning sky
